England 2000
In the beginning of 2000 I spent 4 months in the
wonderful city of London. I worked at British Gas
Trading as marketing trainee. I lived together with 3 others, Christian,
Claus and Alison, in an apartment in central London only 300 yards from Tower
Bridge. I also worked together with Christian. Each we traveled 90 minutes to
get to work in Staines, which is a bit South of London, almost next to Heathrow
Airport.
I really liked London and the English people, but it
was a bit difficult to get used to a huge city like London. No matter where you
went there would always be thousands of people and you would have to wait a lot
on the trains and subways.
But I find that the English people really has got the
hang of it with their pub-culture. No matter which day you decided to go out for
a few drinks there would always be people in the pubs. Of course there was the
football as well. As I really enjoy watching football England is the place to
be. Here is a list of the matches I attended during my stay in London:
Queens Park Rangers - Nottingham Forrest 1-1
Not a good game, but my first experience of football in
England. It was obvious that both teams were struggling to keep their place in
the Nation-Wide league. Though I think QPR was the better team this day.
Millwall - Bournemuth 3-1
After a nervous start by Millwall at The New Denn, they
really played well in the last 60 minutes of the match. They really were the
better team and almost made it to the Nation-Wide after loosing the play-off
final at Wembley.
Fullham - Blackburn 2-2
A good game considering it was the Nation-Wide league.
I was very impressed by Karl-Heinz Riedle, who played a splendid game and scored
a great goal on a marvelous header.
Tottenham - Middlesbrough 2-3
The Spurs fans were not happy with the performance of
their side - and I was not impressed either. With stars like Ginola, Sol
Campbell, Allan Nielsen and others they were not able to beat Bryan Robsons
troops. A very poor performance. But the Stadium was so cool. White Hart Lane is
the best Stadium I have ever been at. We were sitting so close to the pitch,
that I was scared as Paul Ince came late for yet another tackle only metres away
from my seat.
Tottenham - Wimbledon 3-0
I just had to come back to this wonderful Stadium -
White Hart Lane. Wimbledon really played like a relegated team already, though
they still had the chance for survival. They really needed players like old
Vinnie Jones to lift their level to a descent level.
The good thing about London was also, that it was not
very far from home. A couple of hours on the plane and we could be home again.
It was also a little easier for friends and family to come and visit us.
Christians girlfriend visited us a couple of times and my parents and my sister
also came to see us. At the end of our stay Anja and Benny, two of my frieds
from college, came to see us. We had a great time and I did my best to show them
all of London in just a couple of days. At least they got to see some of the
pubs and bars so I hope they were happy.

Benny and the stars - or is it
the other way round - you decide.
